Audition Requirements

  • Scales
  • Short solo or etude (demonstrating technique and musicality)
  • Sight reading

Note: There is no audition required for the Prelude Orchestra. See Prelude Orchestra section for further details

Prelude Orchestra Audition Information

There is no audition required for the Prelude Orchestra.  Members are primarily in grades 3 – 6 and are accepted on the recommendation of a private or school music teacher. Prelude Orchestra is for young string players, who have had a basic introduction to music reading. Technical level should be the equivalent of completing Suzuki book 2.

Intermezzo Orchestra Audition Information 

The Intermezzo Orchestra is primarily made up of young musicians in Middle School and High School. Emphasis in Intermezzo Orchestra is on building orchestral playing skills and reading ability.

Scale Preparation 2 Octave C, G, D, A, E, F, B-flat, E-flat Major Scales
Strings
  • Knowledge of 3rd position for Violin/Viola, 4th position for Violincello
  • Shifting
  • Vibrato technique
Woodwinds & Brass Minimum of 2 years public school and/or private instruction
Percussionists Demonstrate the basic rudiments on the snare drum and ability to maintain a steady beat / pulse

 Symphony Orchestra Audition Information

A majority of Symphony Orchestra members are in High School, or are selected from advanced, mature Junior High students. The symphony Orchestra performs standard orchestral literature, generally not educational arrangements.

Scale Preparation 2 Octave (3 if you can) C, G, D, A, E, F, B-flat, E-flat, A-flat  Major Scales.
Strings Show proficiency in 1st and 3rd positions, be able to play in 2nd and 4th positions.
Woodwinds & Brass Prepare 2 Octave (or full range) chromatic scales in addition to major scales listed above.
Percussionists Demonstrate the basic rudiments on the snare drum, tuning timpani and have begun mallet work, including playing music written in treble clef.
